Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj): The Complete Buying Guide

If Neelam is the stone people fear, Pukhraj is the stone people are handed. It is the gemstone most often gifted by parents, most often suggested for a delayed marriage, and most often bought without a single question asked about quality. Its reputation as a gentle, safe stone is exactly why so many people end up wearing a heat-treated yellow sapphire, or worse, a yellow topaz sold as one, and never find out. This guide covers what a Pukhraj actually is, who tradition recommends it for, and how to judge one before you pay.

What Pukhraj actually is

Yellow sapphire is the yellow variety of corundum, the same mineral as ruby and blue sapphire, simply coloured differently by trace elements. It sits at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it one of the most durable stones you can wear daily. In Vedic astrology it belongs to Brihaspati (Jupiter), the guru, the planet associated with knowledge, wisdom, expansion, marriage, prosperity and good counsel. Of all the navratna, Jupiter's stone is the one most often described as broadly benefic. That reputation is deserved. It is also the reason people skip the checks.

Who is traditionally advised to wear Pukhraj

• Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces), both ruled by Jupiter, so Pukhraj is their primary stone
• People running a Jupiter mahadasha or antardasha
• Charts where Jupiter is weak but well-placed, or where Jupiter rules an important house, commonly the case for Mesha (Aries), Kark (Cancer) and Simha (Leo) ascendants, though this must be confirmed from the chart
• Traditionally recommended where the concern is delayed marriage, education and concentration, or santaan prapti

Where people go wrong

Jupiter is benefic by nature, but it is not benefic in every chart. For some ascendants, Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra) are the ones astrologers examine most carefully, Jupiter rules houses that make it a functional malefic, and a strong Pukhraj is not automatically desirable. So the rule at Destiny Star Stores does not change for the "safe" stone either: we ask for birth details before recommending a Pukhraj. A gentle stone worn for the wrong planet is still the wrong stone. It simply disappoints you quietly instead of loudly.

Yellow Sapphire vs Yellow Topaz, the confusion that costs the most money

This is the single biggest mis-selling problem in the Indian market, and it survives because both stones are yellow and one name sounds like the other.

They are not the same stone, they do not carry the same value, and tradition does not treat them as equal. If a price seems remarkably low for a large, clean, bright yellow stone, the mineral name on the certificate is the first thing to check, not the seller's word at the counter.

Judging quality: the four things that matter

1. Colour. The most valued yellow sapphires show an even, medium-intensity golden yellow, bright, but not so pale that the stone reads white in daylight, and not so brown that it goes dull. 2. Clarity. Natural sapphires contain inclusions. What matters is whether they are visible to the eye, whether they sit in the centre of the table, and whether they threaten durability. A perfectly clean, cheap yellow stone should raise questions, not excitement. 3. Origin. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) is the classical source for Pukhraj. Bangkok remains the main trading hub globally, and African and Thai material is widely available at more accessible prices. Origin belongs on the certificate. 4. Treatment. Most yellow sapphire in the market is heat-treated to improve colour. For jewellery that is completely standard. For astrological use, the stone should be natural and untreated, and the certificate must state the treatment status explicitly, not leave it blank.

Why two Pukhraj can differ enormously in price

When you compare two quotes, compare all six lines. Comparing only carat weight is how buyers convince themselves they got a bargain.

Weight: ratti, carat, and what to ask for

Weight is prescribed from your chart, not from your budget, and not from what looks impressive on the hand. Recommendations commonly fall in the 3 to 7 ratti range, but treat that as context rather than advice. 1 carat = 200 mg (0.20 g). 1 ratti is approximately 0.91 carat, and 1 carat is approximately 1.10 ratti. So a 5 ratti Pukhraj is roughly a 4.55 carat stone. Always confirm which unit a seller is quoting before comparing prices.

Wearing rules for Pukhraj

The mantra traditionally chanted for Jupiter is Om Bram Breem Braum Sah Gurave Namah, recited before the stone is first worn.

If a natural Pukhraj is out of reach

Untreated Ceylon yellow sapphire in a good size is genuinely expensive, and there is no honest way around that. Vedic tradition allows substitutes for Jupiter: Citrine (Sunela), the most widely used substitute, and Yellow Topaz (Sunehla), a legitimate substitute when sold honestly as topaz. Both are natural stones, both are worn on a Thursday in gold or panchdhatu, and both cost a fraction of a fine sapphire. What we will always say plainly: a substitute does not carry the rarity, value or strength attributed to the original.

Caring for your yellow sapphire

At hardness 9 the stone will outlast the setting. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Check the prongs once a year, particularly on an open-back setting where more of the stone is exposed. Remove the ring for the gym, swimming and household chemicals, for the metal's sake more than the sapphire's.
