Gemstone Wearing Rules: Day, Time, Finger and Mantra
gemstone guide, gemstone wearing rules, mantra, ratna, vedic astrology
Most people spend weeks choosing a gemstone and about four minutes deciding how to wear it. That is the wrong way round. In Vedic astrology, the stone is only one of five decisions, and the other four are free. You do not need a bigger budget to wear your ratna correctly. You need the right day, the right finger, the right metal, the right weight, and a few minutes of preparation before it first touches your skin. Here is the complete set of rules, in the order they matter.
Rule 1: The right day
Every planet rules a day of the week, and its stone is worn for the first time on that day.
| Gemstone | Planet | Day to first wear |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby (Manik) | Sun | Sunday |
| Pearl (Moti) | Moon | Monday |
| Red Coral (Moonga) | Mars | Tuesday |
| Emerald (Panna) | Mercury | Wednesday |
| Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) | Jupiter | Thursday |
| Diamond / Opal / White Sapphire | Venus | Friday |
| Blue Sapphire (Neelam) | Saturn | Saturday |
| Hessonite (Gomed) | Rahu | Saturday |
| Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) | Ketu | Saturday |
This applies to the first wearing. After that the ring stays on, you are not expected to remove and re-wear it weekly.
Rule 2: The right time
Three timing points are traditionally observed: The hora. Each day is divided into planetary hours, and the stone is worn during the hora of its own planet, Guru hora for Pukhraj, Shani hora for Neelam. Any panchang app will show you the day's horas. Morning versus evening. Most stones are worn in the morning, within roughly two hours of sunrise. Saturn's stones, Neelam, Gomed, Lehsunia, are the exception, traditionally worn in the evening. Shukla paksha. The waxing phase of the moon, from new moon to full moon, is considered the more auspicious fortnight for beginning anything new, including a gemstone. If the perfect muhurat is weeks away, most astrologers will give you a workable one sooner. Do not let timing become a reason to keep an expensive stone sitting in a drawer.
Rule 3: The right finger, and the right hand
Each finger is associated with a planet, which is why the finger is not a matter of comfort or fit.
| Finger | Stones traditionally worn |
|---|---|
| Index finger | Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) |
| Middle finger | Blue Sapphire, White Sapphire, Hessonite, Cat's Eye |
| Ring finger | Ruby, Red Coral |
| Little finger | Emerald, Natural Pearl |
The rule most people get wrong: men wear the gemstone ring on the right hand, women on the left. And a practical note our team repeats at the counter, get the ring sized properly. A ring that spins on the finger or has to be forced past the knuckle will come off "just for today", and today becomes never.
Rule 4: The right metal
The metal is not a style choice. It is considered part of how the stone works.
| Gemstone | Recommended metal |
|---|---|
| Ruby (Manik) | Gold or Panchdhatu |
| Pearl (Moti) | Silver |
| Red Coral (Moonga) | Copper, Gold or Panchdhatu |
| Emerald (Panna) | Silver |
| Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) | Gold or Panchdhatu |
| Diamond / Opal / White Sapphire | White Gold or Silver |
| Blue Sapphire (Neelam) | Silver or Panchdhatu |
| Hessonite (Gomed) | Silver |
| Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) | Silver |
Panchdhatu, the traditional five-metal alloy, is the safe middle path when gold is out of budget or the chart allows either.
Rule 5: The right weight
Weight is prescribed from your kundli, not from your budget and not from what looks impressive. Too light is traditionally considered ineffective; heavier than advised is simply money spent on carats nobody asked you to wear. Remember the two units: 1 carat = 200 mg (0.20 g). 1 ratti is approximately 0.91 carat, and 1 carat is approximately 1.10 ratti. A 5 ratti stone is roughly 4.55 carats. Always confirm which unit the seller is quoting.
The setting: why open-back matters
Astrological rings are made with an open back, so the stone sits in direct contact with the skin. A closed setting looks neater and is easier to make, which is exactly why some sellers default to it. If you are buying a ring for astrological purposes, ask for the open back and check it before you pay.
Energising the stone before you wear it
This is the step people skip, and it takes fifteen minutes.
- Clean the ring, a soak in raw milk, or in Ganga jal with a little honey and tulsi, is the traditional preparation. Rinse gently in clean water afterwards.
- Place it before your deity or in your puja space, on the correct day, at the chosen hora.
- Chant the planet's beeja mantra 108 times. A rudraksha mala keeps the count.
- Wear it immediately after the chanting, on the correct finger and hand.
The beeja mantras:
| Planet | Mantra |
|---|---|
| Sun | Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah |
| Moon | Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah |
| Mars | Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah |
| Mercury | Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah |
| Jupiter | Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah |
| Venus | Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah |
| Saturn | Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah |
| Rahu | Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah |
| Ketu | Om Straam Streem Straum Sah Ketave Namah |
If chanting is not part of your practice, tell your astrologer, most will guide you through a simpler version rather than have you skip it entirely.
After you start wearing it
- Keep it on. The stone is meant to stay in continuous contact.
- Clean it gently. Lukewarm water, mild soap, a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless you know the stone is untreated and unfractured.
- Take it off for rough work. Gym, swimming, cleaning chemicals. This protects the setting more than the stone.
- Check the prongs once a year. Open-back settings expose more of the stone, so a loose prong is the failure mode to watch for.
- If the stone cracks or falls out, tradition says it should be replaced rather than repaired and worn on.
The five mistakes we see most often
- Buying the stone without a kundli check, the other four rules cannot rescue the wrong stone
- Wearing it on whichever finger it happens to fit
- A closed-back setting bought for astrological purposes
- Skipping the energising step entirely
- Removing the ring "for a few days" and never putting it back on
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear the ring as a pendant instead?
Yes. The day, metal and energising process stay the same, and the stone should still touch the skin.
What if I miss the right day or muhurat?
Wait for the next occurrence of that day. It is a week at most, and there is no benefit to rushing it.
Do I ever need to re-energise the stone?
Some traditions suggest re-doing it after a long gap in wearing, or after a major cleaning. Ask your astrologer for your specific stone.
Can I wear two gemstones together?
Only after checking your chart. Certain planetary pairings, Saturn with Jupiter, for instance, are examined carefully before both stones are advised.
Is a silver setting inferior to gold?
No. For several stones silver is the prescribed metal, not the budget option.
