Emerald (Panna): Zambian vs Colombian, Which One Is Right for You?

Panna is the stone customers ask the most confident questions about and know the least about. Almost everyone has heard that Colombian emeralds are "the best". Fewer people know that most Colombian material on the market is oil-treated, and that for astrological wear, treatment is exactly what you are trying to avoid. So the stone with the most famous name is often the wrong stone for the job. Here is how the two origins actually compare, and how to judge a Panna before you pay for one.

What Panna is

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured by traces of chromium or vanadium. It sits at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily wear, but brittle, because nearly every emerald carries internal fractures. The trade even has an affectionate name for the inclusions: jardin, the French word for garden. In Vedic astrology, Panna belongs to Budh (Mercury), the planet of intellect, communication, analysis, commerce and speech.

Who is traditionally advised to wear it

• Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo), both ruled by Mercury, so Panna is their primary stone
• People running a Mercury mahadasha or antardasha
• Charts where Mercury is weak but well-placed; for Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra) ascendants Mercury is often favourable, though this must be confirmed from the full chart
• Traditionally recommended where the concern is studies and concentration, public speaking, or business and negotiation

Zambian vs Colombian: the honest comparison

To be clear about what that last row means. A fine untreated Colombian emerald is one of the great gemstones in the world, and if you find one and can afford it, it is a magnificent stone by any measure. But that is not what most buyers are shown. What most buyers are shown is an oiled Colombian at a Colombian price, and for a stone worn to strengthen a planet, tradition asks for natural and untreated. Zambian material gives you a far better chance of getting exactly that, in a good size, at a price that makes sense. Any seller who tells you origin alone decides quality, in either direction, is selling, not advising.

Oiling: the treatment you must ask about

Because emeralds are naturally fractured, filling those fractures with oil or resin makes them look dramatically cleaner. Cedarwood oil is traditional; modern fillers include polymers. This is so widespread that in the jewellery trade it is considered normal and acceptable, provided it is disclosed. Two things follow:

• For jewellery, an oiled emerald is a legitimate purchase, just pay an oiled-emerald price, not an untreated one.
• For astrological use, insist on untreated, and insist it appears in writing on the certificate. Wording such as no indications of clarity enhancement is what you are looking for.

Oil is also not permanent. It can dry out or seep over years, and the stone will look more included than the day you bought it. That is not a defect appearing, it is the original stone becoming visible again.

Judging a Panna: four things that matter

1. Colour. The most valued emeralds show a medium to medium-dark, vivid green with even saturation. Too light and the stone barely reads as emerald; too dark and it goes flat under indoor light. 2. Clarity. Expect inclusions. What matters is whether fractures reach the surface where they threaten durability, and whether the jardin is dense enough to kill the colour. A completely clean, cheap "emerald" is usually glass, doublet or synthetic. 3. Cut. The emerald cut, a rectangular step cut with clipped corners, exists because of this stone. The shape reduces stress on the corners, which is where a brittle stone chips first. 4. Certification. Species and variety should read natural beryl, variety emerald, and the comments line must address clarity enhancement. Every stone we sell is IIGJ certified with the treatment status stated.

Why prices vary so widely

Weight and units

Weight is prescribed from your chart. Do keep in mind that emerald is a lighter mineral than sapphire, a 5 carat emerald looks noticeably bigger on the hand than a 5 carat sapphire, so do not judge size by carat alone across different stones. 1 carat = 200 mg (0.20 g). 1 ratti is approximately 0.91 carat, and 1 carat is approximately 1.10 ratti.

Substitutes

When a natural untreated Panna of the prescribed weight is out of reach, Vedic tradition allows Green Onyx and, in some traditions, Peridot. Both are natural, both are far more affordable, and both are worn on a Wednesday in silver. And as we say with every uparatna: a substitute does not carry the rarity, value or strength attributed to the original. Buy one knowing exactly what it is.

Caring for an emerald, this one actually matters

Emerald is the most fragile stone in the navratna, and most damage comes from cleaning, not from wearing.

• Never put an emerald in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. This is the single most common way emeralds are destroyed, it can drive out the oil and open the fractures.
• Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Nothing more.
• Keep it away from heat, solvents, perfume and hairspray.
• Store it separately; harder stones will scratch it in a shared box.
• Remove the ring for gym, swimming and housework. An emerald chips where a sapphire would shrug.
